First Principles of Music Production
An on-demand music production course for artists and new producers.
Go beyond tips and tricks by learning the fundamental building blocks behind the recording process.
Learning music production for the first time is hard.
Challenge 1: First you have to decide if you're going to use Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, ProTools, Studio One 3, Reason, and dozens of other tools.
Challenge 2: Then you have to find sounds, VSTs, third-party plugins, preset packs, drum kits, and with each tool that you buy, the number of choices you have to make to find a single sound you like grows exponentially.
Challenge 3: Next up you need to learn about chords, how to write a good melody, song arrangement techniques, countermelodies, effects and transitions, sound design, editing, recording techniques, mixing, and mastering.
Challenge 4: You have to learn how to mix music well. You need to identify the problem areas, what isn't working, why your beat sounds hollow or the bass isn't hitting hard enough or a thousand other things.
Challenge 4-100: Finally, you have to go out and figure out how to distribute your music, and you have to overcome the fear of putting yourself out there for the first time.
By now you get the point: Learning music production from the ground up is hard.
When things aren't going well, it's easy to blame it on the tools. "I need a better DAW, that's the problem. I'll buy Logic Pro and then I'll make more music."
But that doesn't make sense. It's like an architect saying "I need a better piece of paper to draw this blueprint. Then I'll design a better house."
Of course, we need good tools to do our work. But the truth is that a true craftsman can make something great with even a lackluster tool.
Craftspeople focus on (1) expanding their foundational knowledge and (2) doing the disciplines it takes to get better.
In the world of music production, it's so easy to learn techniques and tactics. But the reality is that tactics and techniques are trends. Trends are here today and gone tomorrow.
